Brighten Up Your Home with These Spring Cleaning Tips from Smith Douglas Communities

Spring has officially arrived in metro Atlanta, making now the perfect time to get your home in tip-top shape! Smith Douglas Communities, a new home builder in metro Atlanta, has compiled this great list of tips to help you clean the often overlooked areas of your home:

1.       Wait to wash your windows on a cloudy day. If it’s too sunny, the cleaner can dry too quickly and leave your windows streaky.
2.       To clean up the mess in your microwave that weeks of reheating food can leave, heat a bowl of vinegar and water inside for about 10 minutes. Then, wipe down the inside of the microwave for a sparkling clean finish.
3.       To refresh a hard working washing machine, run it without clothing or other items inside with bleach. Then, run it a second time with vinegar for a sparkling clean machine!
4.       Refrigerators accumulate dust just like any other item in your home. The condenser coils, which are usually located in the back of your refrigerator or behind the toe grill, can collect too much dust, causing them to overheat. Clean the coils with your vacuum cleaner attachments or a long-handled bottle brush.
5.       If your coffee cups have built up brown stains after years of use, don’t get rid of them. Instead, wet the cup, sprinkle on baking soda and mix them together to form a paste. Continue to rub the paste to allow it to release the stains, then rinse and wash the cups as usual.
6.       If your stove burners have blackened after lots of use, don’t waste your time and energy scrubbing them. Instead, place them in large zip-lock bags and add enough diluted ammonia to immerse them. Be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands when you are handling the ammonia. Set the bags outside overnight to keep the smell outdoors, and then rinse them in the morning.
7.       Although you regularly change your sheets, have you ever thought about cleaning your mattress? Mix baking soda with lavender oil and spread it all over your mattress. Wait an hour and then vacuum the baking soda up. Your mattress will be like new, and it will smell heavenly when you lay down for bed!
8.       Don’t try to dust your lampshades with feather dusters or damp cloths. Instead, just rub a lint roller across it. It will easily pick up all of the dust without spreading it around or damaging your lamp shade.
9.       Cabinets and baseboards can be a chore to clean in any home, no matter how big or small it is. Use a sponge or sponge map and dishwashing soap to scrub them clean, and then dry the insides with a clean cloth.
1.   If your ceiling fan is caked in dust, take an old pillowcase and slip it around the fan blades. Rub it back and forth until it has collected all of the dust, and then toss the pillow case in the laundry.
